David MacLennan Award

Submissions are open for the David MacLennan Award!

In honour of the Scottish theatre legend and founder of A Play, A Pie and A Pint, the David MacLennan Award aims to celebrate David’s generosity of spirit, his faith in the magic of theatre, his encouragement of others, his excitement about collaboration and an unrelenting belief that anyone could give theatre a go, no matter their previous experience.

Entries are read anonymously, and judged purely on the quality of their work, and its suitability for A Play, A Pie and A Pint’s programme.

We hope this award will serve as a starting point for a new writer to find their voice and have their work seen by the public in a professional production. The winning entry will be professionally developed and produced as part of A Play, A Pie and A Pint’s Autumn 2026 season.

This opportunity is open to anyone living in Scotland aged 18+ who has never written a professionally produced play before.
