Playwriting (MSc)

The MSc Playwriting programme at the University of Edinburgh is led by award-winning playwright Nicola McCartney (Lifeboat, Heritage, Standing Wave) and focuses on the craft of writing for performance, as well as on how a script would play out in real space and time in front of an audience.

The programme can be followed full-time over one year, or part-time over two years, taught through a combination of seminars, workshops and one to one supervision. The course also contains professional master-classes by some of Europe's leading playwrights and theatre artists.

A core component of the degree features development workshops with professional actors and directors. The programme includes attending performances at Edinburgh theatres in order to help writers build links to the professional theatre scene in Edinburgh and beyond.

The academic year will culminate in a public, professional reading of writers' work-in-progress at the internationally renowned Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Playwrights' Studio, Scotland manage practical aspects of the programme, including script development workshops and public readings of the students' work.
