Work With Us

Associate Reader

Associate Reader

Deadline for applications: Tuesday 16th September, 5pm.

This opportunity is provided to playwrights as part of Playwrights’ Studio’s remit to develop and support playwrights’ growth as artists, so it is offered to those with professional playwriting experience.

You must have had two or more professional productions of your work as a writer (because your experience of production will be drawn upon for this role and will inform our workshops and reader training).

You must be interested in script reading and analysis, though you don’t have to have ‘officially’ done it before.

Further Information

 Core Responsibilities

  • Reading and responding to plays on behalf of Playwrights’ Studio as part of our reading services. Some of this work may be written directly from you and some will be written on behalf of the organisation, so there is a negotiable level of anonymity.

  • Developing resources to support other playwrights in developing their script reading, dramaturgy and analytical skills.

  • Supporting the team in the development of the year’s events and activities for playwrights.

  • Attending plays and events on behalf of Playwrights’ Studio as appropriate.

You do not need to have specific experience of reading and responding to plays, as support and guidance in developing your voice in this type of work will be given as part of the role. We will support the Associate Reader in developing their skills and networks in consultation with them.

Other Responsibilities

We will work with the Associate Reader to develop occasional workshops and opportunities to share good practice around script reading, note giving and other dramaturgical practices, so the Associate Reader may attend and, in some cases, run events on behalf of Playwrights’ Studio, depending on their experience and preferences.

Commitment

The opportunity is offered on a year long freelance contract (to help provide stability and forward planning for you and for us) with a six month break clause.

The commitment is three days per calendar month. We offer a flexible work pattern (working times, with consultation, that suit you and with working days that can be reassigned to a future month). The work pattern can be discussed in advance or altered ad hoc as writing work comes up.

The Associate Reader will have access to a work space at the CCA in Glasgow for all their work days. Due to the nature of some elements of the role, our expectation would be that at least one day a month in person contact time would be required.

A strong, ongoing and demonstrable knowledge of theatre work in Scotland is required for this role.

Management

The role will be line managed by the Creative Director.

Fee

3 days a month at £180 a day, paid on the last day of each month on a freelance basis. This is equivalent to £6480 over the course of the contract. The successful candidate will be responsible for their own tax and NI contributions.

Application Process

To Apply

Please complete the Jotform by uploading a cover letter (two pages of A4 maximum, but don’t feel you need to fill two pages!) addressing your interest and fit for this role along with a CV.

You will be directed to an Equalities Monitoring Form (this will not form part of your application) which we ask that you complete. You will then receive an acknowledgement e-mail.

All applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application by Friday, 3rd October.

Deadline

Tuesday 16th September, 5pm.
